Barwon Heads House is a modern country coastal home designed to sit quietly within its natural surroundings. The brief called for a practical, relaxed and welcoming family home — warm and unpretentious, where everyday life unfolds easily and friends and extended family are always encouraged to stay. Designed for a family of five, including three teenage boys and a dog, the house balances robustness with a sense of ease and generosity.
A restrained palette of natural materials anchors the architecture in its coastal setting. Rammed earth walls, unfilled travertine, limestone flooring and timber ceilings create a tactile, grounded interior, with spaces flowing seamlessly from inside to out. Limestone laid in a random pattern extends to the alfresco areas, reinforcing the connection to landscape, while simple joinery framed by rammed earth nib walls keeps the focus on material and form.
Subtle moments of colour provide quiet expression throughout the home — a green stair and balustrade echoed in ensuite tiles, and a matt green laminate in the laundry. A curved study desk upstairs follows the architecture, opening to treetop views and offering a calm retreat within a highly liveable family home.
